The 54th edition of the Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca will be held from March 28 to April 5 in Palma Bay. Since registration opened in January, 700 crews from 53 countries have confirmed their participation in the season's first race, gathering the ten Olympic disciplines for the Los Angeles 2028 cycle.

"The Sofía will be the first major multiclass regatta after Paris 2024 where Olympic hopefuls can face their rivals," explains Jaime Carbonell, institutional relations manager of the 54 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca.

The list of pre-registered participants includes a mix of new crews beginning their journey to the next Games and names already renowned in Olympic sailing. Notable champions from Paris 2024 like Valentin Bontus from Austria (Formula Kite Men), Eleanor Aldridge from the UK (Formula Kite Women), Tom Reuveny from Israel (iQFOiL Men), and Marta Maggetti from Italy (iQFOiL Women) will be present, along with other medalists from various disciplines and promising young sailors using this first multiclass event of the season to advance their preparation. Among the 75 Spanish flag crews confirmed are the new 470 pairings (Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona, Silvia Mas and Alex Marsans), Nacra 17 (Joan Cardona and Nicole Van der Velde, Tara Pacheco and Pablo García), and 49erFX (Alicia Fras and Elena Barrio, Patricia Suárez and Melania Henke). Established figures like Pilar Lamadrid (iQFOiL Women), Nacho Baltasar (iQFOiL Men), and Gisela Pulido (Formula Kite Women) will also not be absent.

Traditionally, the first year after an Olympics tends to have lower registration: In 2009, the first edition towards London 2012 gathered 539 crews in Palma Bay; in 2013, the first towards Rio 2016 had 600; and in 2017, in preparation for Tokyo 2020, there were 657. "Given these precedents, we can anticipate that the figure of 700 pre-registered one month before the competition starts is a sign that it will be a very good edition of the Sofía," concludes Carbonell.

Once again, participants are invited to compete in the Mallorca Sailing Center Regatta, a race many crews include in their training program before the Sofía. The event will take place from March 13 to 16 in Palma Bay, is open to all classes, and will count as the Spanish Cup for ILCA 6, 49er, and 49er FX.

The 54th S.A.R. Princesa Sofía Trophy Mallorca is held under the joint organization of Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Spanish Royal Sailing Federation, and the Balearic Sailing Federation, with the support of World Sailing and the main public institutions of the Balearic Islands.

The Trophy is also part of the 2025 Sailing Grand Slam alongside the Semaine Olympique Française, Dutch Water Week, Kieler Woche, and Long Beach Olympic Classes Regatta.
