‘Alegre’ looks to make history in the grand finale of the 52 SUPER SERIES PalmaVela Sailing Week

The Bay of Palma showed its most extreme side on the fourth day of competition in the 52 SUPER SERIES PalmaVela Sailing Week. Sustained winds of around 30 knots and waves between two and three meters high persuaded the Race Committee to keep the fleet moored in the hope that conditions would ease.

Jon Gunderson, trimmer on ‘Alegre’, was relieved by the decision: ‘Not racing was the right decision. We have new boats and a lot of changes in the fleet, so if we race in these conditions things are going to break’.

After four days and four races, Andy Soriano's ‘Alegre’ leads the provisional standings, tied on 14 points with Doug DeVos' ‘Quantum Racing powered by American Magic’ and one point ahead of Takashi Okura's ‘Sled’.

Leaders ‘Alegre’ are looking for a title they have yet to win since joining the circuit in 2015. The British team was second on three occasions (Valencia 2015, Scarlino 2016 and Menorca 2021) and in 2023 managed to get onto the podium in the last event of the season, although they finished sixth overall. He arrived at the 52 SUPER SERIES PalmaVela Sailing Week just a month and a half after launching his new boat, which adds merit to his position at the top of the provisional rankings.

The first event of the 52 SUPER SERIES 2024 will be resolved in a grand final tomorrow, Thursday. The forecast is for winds in the 14-17 knot range, so the first start of the day has been brought forward to 12:00h to try to get three races underway before 15:30h, the deadline for the final start of the championship.
