All Set for the Volta a Mallorca to Set Sail

25th July 2024 by Agencies

The Volta Mallorca 2024 journey kicks off next Friday, July 26, in Cala Figuera. The Consell de Mallorca is organizing this prominent summer nautical event with a series of cultural and charitable activities at iconic locations on the island, such as the Jansky concert at the Coves del Drac and the Mar Grimalt concert at the Cuevas de Artà.

The Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca, Antònia Roca, explained that all proceeds will go to the Amès Foundation, with which a collaboration agreement has been signed.

The journey will set sail this Friday, July 26, and continue until Saturday, August 3. The starting point is Cala Figuera, and it will visit eight ports on the island: Portocristo, Portocolom, Cala Ratjada, Alcudia, Puerto de Sóller, Banyalbufar, Andratx, and Palma. "The voyage will be undertaken by a group of nine traditional boats, including the Balear," Roca detailed.

In this way, the Consell de Mallorca commemorates the 125th anniversary of the courageous feat of the nine members of the Royal Guild of Azalladores, who decided in 1899 to circumnavigate the island of Mallorca aboard the llaüt San Miquel. Documentation of this event was found in the Can Clar Archive, an investigation was conducted, and Agustí Adrover documented it in the book "Diary of the Santanyí Expedition Around Mallorca" in 2019.

"With this initiative, we highlight Mallorca's heritage, culture, and gastronomy: there will be concerts, guided tours, lectures, and plenty of sailing during these days around the island," emphasized Antònia Roca. Throughout the entire journey, these eight llaüts will participate permanently: Encina, Único, Brando, Mantilla, Alconassar, Rata, San Miguel, and Posidonia. Additional traditional boats, such as the Balear, Cala Sarral, and Besitos, will join certain segments.
