APB Approves New Measure to Improve Water Quality in Ports

25th March 2025 by Agencies

The Balearic Port Authority (APB) has approved a new ordinance aimed at improving water quality in its ports by restricting the use of certain exhaust gas cleaning systems. The regulation specifically prohibits the use of open-loop systems, known as scrubbers, requiring ships to operate in closed circuit and to manage the waste generated properly.

This measure prevents the discharge of contaminated water into the sea, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of maritime traffic and contributing to the conservation of the Balearic Islands' marine ecosystem. It will also benefit local flora and fauna as well as key sectors of the Balearic economy, such as tourism and fishing.

A key aspect of the ordinance is the ban on the use of open-loop systems within port waters, as these allow the direct discharge of wash water into the sea. Instead, ships equipped with closed-loop or hybrid systems must store the generated waste and deliver it to onshore reception facilities, thus preventing its release into the marine ecosystem.

Additionally, the regulation requires all ships to report the existence and operation of these systems onboard. To ensure compliance, the APB and the competent maritime authority will carry out regular inspections.

This new regulation will prevent the discharge of contaminated waters with heavy metals and sulfur compounds, thereby reducing the levels of harmful substances that affect marine biodiversity. Furthermore, the measure promotes more responsible management of the waste generated by ships, in line with the MARPOL Convention guidelines for the prevention of pollution by ships.

This new ordinance consolidates the APB's strategy towards reducing the environmental impact of maritime traffic, promoting cleaner and more responsible navigation. It reinforces the port authority's commitment to protecting the marine ecosystem and improving the quality of port waters.

At a time when the preservation of the marine environment is a global priority, regulating exhaust gas cleaning systems represents a fundamental advance. With this measure, the APB reaffirms its role as a promoter of more sustainable maritime transport, aligned with current environmental challenges.
