Balearic fishermen recover a juvenile nursehound

At the beginning of the year, the Palma Aquarium Foundation started a campaign with the fishermen's guilds of the Balearic Islands to share, ask for collaboration and make a common effort in favor of the Balearic Sea. This campaign is part of an action of the alliance "Petits Taurons - Acció Stellaris".

The campaign is being carried out during the first quarter of the year 2024 and, as a result of the first visits to the fishermen, a juvenile specimen of the nursehound has been obtained to continue advancing in the project. This juvenile male was accidentally caught in a trammel net and is currently recovering at Palma Aquarium's facilities, where it will later form part of a reproduction programme in a controlled artificial environment in order to obtain offspring to be introduced into the sea and thus help to increase the population. To date, 61 specimens have been introduced in various areas of the island of Mallorca.

Fishermen have been the first to be interested in working for the conservation of marine species and their habitats. Without their collaboration, this and many other conservation efforts could not be carried out.
