Benito Núñez Quintanilla, from the DGMM to General Secretary for Air and Marine Transport

The Council of Ministers has approved, at the proposal of the new Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, the appointment of Benito Núñez Quintanilla as the new General Secretary for Air and Maritime Transport.

Benito Núñez Quintanilla, who has been the Director General of the Merchant Navy for the last six years, first in the Ministry of Public Works and then in the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, will now head a new Secretariat General that will have two Directorates General: the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy. 

Born in Albacete in 1976, Benito Núñez Quintanilla is a Naval and Oceanic Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and a civil servant in the Corps of Naval Engineers since 2004. He has worked as a naval inspector at the Burela Marine Captaincy between 2004 and 2005. From 2005 to 2009 he held the positions of director of the Provincial Service in Albacete, deputy director attached to the General Secretariat and Vocal Advisor in the Support Unit of the Mutualidad General de funcionarios Civiles del Estado.

In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Director General for Economic and Administrative Affairs of the Infrastructure and Equipment Management of the Ministry of Culture and in 2010 he was appointed Advisor to the Cabinet of the First Vice-President of the Government.

Since November 2010 he has worked as a member of the Support Unit of the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy and since 2014 he has been the alternate representative of Spain on the Administrative Board of the European Marine Safety Agency.

Since 2018, Benito Núñez Quintanilla has been Director General of the Merchant Navy. Gustavo Santana Hernández, a naval engineer born in Puerto Rosario in 1973, who until now was a technical advisor in the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy, will now take over this position.
