Calvià prepares its beaches for the season by removing accumulated posidonia

The municipal company Calvià 2000 has already started the cleaning of the beaches of Santa Ponsa. From the 1st of May, the process will continue in the rest of the beaches of the municipality.

Intense work of the workers of the public company Calvià 2000 to adapt the beaches of the municipality to the visit of tourists and residents before an Easter week that is expected to have 70% of the hotels open. The posidonia accumulated during the winter is being removed and will be stored in municipal premises until it is returned to the coast to continue with the natural cycle of regeneration. The reed barriers installed to prevent the loss of sand caused by storms and strong winds are also being removed. All of this is a necessary step prior to the installation of urban furniture (walkways, litter bins...) to guarantee the services on the beaches.

The campaign has begun on beaches considered to be urban, specifically in Santa Ponsa, as the regulations have allowed this to be done since 15th of March. Special machinery can be used on urban beaches. From the 1st of May it will be the turn of natural beaches with services. In the case of natural beaches without services, the removal must be carried out manually. 

Andrés Barceló, manager of Calvià 2000, pointed out that "the cleaning starts now and is maintained throughout the season depending on the circumstances and the storms". Together with the cleaning, the sand is flattened and walkways and litter bins are installed to facilitate the service of the concessionaires.

After the season, the stored posidonia is returned to the beach: "the cleaning is done with a special shovel to avoid taking the sand with it. It is then returned to the beach to preserve the natural barriers that prevent the loss of sand during winter storms".
