More than 170 Optimist sailors, with participation also from Menorca and Ibiza thanks to CM Mahón and CN Sant Antoni de Portmany, have battled it out on the water this year in the first part of the Setmana de Vela - Trofeu DURAN, the big event of the children's sailing season in Cala Gamba. Three races were held on the first day, although the unstable wind delayed the start of the races by almost an hour. A spectacle of children's sailing that was repeated this Sunday.

The Optimists accumulated early in the morning in front of the Cala Gamba ramp, filling the esplanade of the club with sails and waiting impatiently to put to sea with the children eager to be able to improve or consolidate the results of the first day. The start was delayed but finally a favourable and stable south-westerly wind of about 12 knots was blowing, which made for a spectacular final day. In the end, only two races were sailed on the second day, so there was not much room for speculation and the young sailors were obliged to give their maximum without respite in each part.

The fight for first place was exciting on the decisive day, as the results of the first day had left a narrow gap between the first classified that could turn the classification upside down at the slightest mistake. However, the Arenal sailor, Montoya, first at the end of the opening day, gave his rivals no chance to sow a hint of doubt and obtained the two partial victories of the day. These two first places added to another two firsts in the three races of the opening day have made his triumph unquestionable. In the women's classification, the best sailor of the Setmana de Vela was Beatriz Quintana, from Cala Gamba, who was unable to repeat her absolute victory last year.

The best in the U13 category in the Setmana de Vela were Marc Provensal (RCN Port Pollença) in the men's category and Emma Frau (RCN Palma) in the women's category. The winners in the U11 group were Joan Orell (CN Cala Gamba) and Martina Palmero (CN S'Estanyol).

Among the Optimist group D sailors, those who have started sailing this year, the local Laura Font, from the CN Cala Gamba, was the winner after discarding her worst result in today's first race. In second place and first place for the men was Manuel Zurita, from the RCN Palma.

Excitement still remains for next weekend, when the ILCA and the Lateen Sailing will take over from the Optimists in the second part of this 15th edition of the Setmana de Vela - Trofeo DURAN organized by the Club Nàutic Cala Gamba.
