Once again this year, the dock staff of Marina Port de Mallorca and Marina Palma Cuarentena, along with their specialized divers, plunge into the waters of the Port of Palma to remove a wide variety of waste, from everyday objects to larger items such as trash containers.

This initiative, besides keeping the waters clean, aims to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting our marine environment and thus prevent further water pollution and harm to the biodiversity residing within it.

The underwater cleaning operation unfolds in several phases. Initially, divers conduct a visual inspection of the seabed to identify and mark the objects for removal. Then, using lifting and flotation techniques, they proceed to collect the debris. The choice of technique depends on the characteristics of the object and the environmental conditions. Once removed, the waste is brought to the surface and placed in specific containers for subsequent management.

This time around, approximately 300 kilograms were removed in the cleaning of the waters of Marina Palma Cuarentena, while about 800 kilograms were removed from the waters of Marina Port de Mallorca.

From tires and batteries to shopping carts and bicycles, the extracted waste exemplifies human irresponsibility and the need to protect our seas.

According to Leonardo Cabrera, the head of the diving team, “This type of action has been carried out for more than 10 years and it still amazes us the amount of waste we find on the seabed. It remains absolutely necessary to dive at least once a year to prevent the accumulation of these elements that pollute the water, flora, and fauna.”

These initiatives by Marina Palma Cuarentena and Marina Port de Mallorca demonstrate their genuine interest, commitment, and responsibility towards the environment, which is why they are recognized with the Blue Flag, ISO 14001, EMAS, and the Carbon Footprint Registry certificate.
