Finally the recreational balearic fishing is being heard by the administration

21st November 2023 by Nautimedia

After years requesting to be heard, the recreational balearic fishing sector will be able to participate actively in the approval of the regulations and management of the recreational fishing of the Balearic Islands. And it is so that the Government has published a draft of the Project of the Regulation of the Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment establishing the Commission for Co-Management of Recreational Fisheries in the Balearic Islands.

As the order states, one of the main claims of the recreational fishing sector has always been the lack of information from the Government and the fact that they are not taken into account when making decisions on matters that directly affect them. For this reason, the Commission for Co-management of Recreational Fishing in the Balearic Islands has been created, which will act as a public participation body with representatives from the recreational fishing sector, the affected administrations, the nautical clubs and scientific institutions, such as the Federació Balear de Cofradías de Pescadores, the Federación Balear de Pesca y Casting, the Federación Balear de Actividades Subacuáticas, the nautical clubs, FANMED, the Asociación Mallorquina de Pesca Responsable, or the Asociación de Pescadores de las Islas Baleares.

The aim of this commission is to promote the participation of the sector in the management of recreational fishing. In this way, it is given the capacity to intervene in decision-making and make proposals in the management of recreational fishing, in order to ensure its sustainability and the conservation of marine resources. Furthermore, this commission, according to the order, will be obligatory for consultation in the processing of any regulation on recreational fishing generated by the Government.

The Government stresses the importance of taking the sector's opinion into account, as "they can contribute both to the preservation of marine ecosystems and to the collection of data and monitoring of species". One of the tools for improving fisheries management is the collection of data, as this data is often necessary for decision-making, and it is only possible to obtain it if the fishing sector is involved.
