Due to the overwhelming demand for participation in the competition, the tournament organizers were forced to hold a lottery among all the clubs interested in playing water polo in a setting different from the usual pools.
The tournament regulations allow for the participation of women's, men's, and mixed teams, which compete against each other in the different tournament brackets. Since its first edition in 2004, the tournament has been fully organized by the Department of Sports of the Sant Josep de sa Talaia City Council, with the support of the Department of Tourism. “The primary goal of Beach Polo is to promote sports tourism by making the most of the island’s beautiful beaches and natural surroundings,” they explain. “The Sant Josep City Council is working with great enthusiasm to ensure a memorable edition that meets the expectations of all participants while also offering numerous parallel activities.”
The high demand for registrations, including those from international clubs, "demonstrates the success and impact the tournament has achieved, positioning Ibiza as a global reference in the world of water polo," they emphasize.
Beach Polo was created to promote water polo on the island of Ibiza, a sport that can only be played at the Sant Josep municipal swimming pool. Since its inception, the Club Natació Sant Josep has played a key role, actively collaborating in the tournament’s organization.
Beyond fostering water polo, "the tournament has helped internationalize the island, attracting a growing number of foreign clubs eager to participate year after year."
