The Navy will compete in the Copa del Rey in two categories: ORC 0 with the 'Aifos' and in the ORC 3 category with the new J/99 built by J2 Sailing. This construction was awarded to the Mallorcan company to renew the Navy's fleet of sailboats.

This fleet will be used to train students in sailing and to participate in regattas. The sailboats, which are 10 meters in length, 3.5 meters in beam, and have a draft of 2 meters, are being built by J2 Sailing under the design of the American shipyard J/Boats. These sailboats are already being delivered, including the unit that will compete in the waters of Palma Bay during this edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE.

The new "Regulus" sailboat will compete in the "Balearia ORC 3" class, a very compact division that includes the smaller boats of the competition. This is part of the restructuring of all ORC classes for this 42nd edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE, which, looking ahead to the 43rd edition, will host the 2025 European Championship.

J/99: Excellence in a Sailboat

The J/99 model allows for both recreational and competitive sailing and has already been tested in regattas. Juan Company, CEO of J2 Sailing, and his team have been finalizing the details of the boat and training with the crew to present an ambitious and highly competitive project, as only a few weeks have passed since the boat's launch.

J sailboats stand out for their excellent performance and versatility. These boats are known for their innovative design, which combines speed and stability, making them ideal for both regattas and sailing training. Key features include:

  • Efficient Hull Design: The hull is designed to maximize speed and minimize water resistance, ensuring good performance in various wind and sea conditions.
  • Ease of Handling: Equipped with an optimized sail system and intuitive controls, these sailboats are manageable for both experienced sailors and trainees, facilitating learning and practice.
  • Robust Construction: Made with high-quality materials and advanced construction techniques, they offer durability and reliability.
  • Modern Equipment: The sailboats are equipped with the latest navigation and safety technology, including GPS systems, communication devices, and emergency equipment.

Training Sailboats

J sailboats are particularly suitable for several fundamental reasons:

  • Comprehensive Training: Their versatile design allows the crew to experience a wide range of sailing conditions, from calm waters to more challenging scenarios, providing thorough and rigorous training.
  • Skill Development: The ease of handling and advanced equipment of the J boats allow for a focus on developing critical sailing and decision-making skills.
  • Safety and Reliability: The robust and high-quality construction of these sailboats ensures that training takes place in a safe environment, minimizing risks.
  • Promotion of Competitiveness: Their performance in regattas fosters a competitive spirit and teamwork, essential values in the training of any sailor.

"The Navy has mainly valued our combination of innovation, quality, and comprehensive support," says Juan Company, CEO of J2 Sailing. "Specifically, they highlighted our dedication to delivering the highest quality products and our focus on continuous improvement; our long history in the naval industry and our reputation for meeting high operational and safety standards; and the guarantee of solid technical and logistical support post-sale, ensuring that any future challenges can be efficiently and effectively addressed."

Full Sail Construction

The first unit of these sailboats was delivered in early July, with more units to be delivered to the Naval School of Marín in the coming weeks. After the summer break, deliveries will be completed in Rota and Ferrol. More than 50 people are directly involved in this project, including engineers, construction technicians, logistics specialists, and post-sale support staff.

To carry out the construction of the J/99 units, J2 Sailing has coordinated an international effort with several key partners in Europe. The steps followed include:

  • Manufacturing in J/Composites (France): The hulls are being manufactured at J/Composites in France, using advanced construction techniques and high-quality materials.
  • Rigging from Selden (Sweden): The rigging, crucial for the operation of the sailboats, is supplied by Selden in Sweden, known for its durability and performance.
  • Sails from Pires de Lima (Portugal): The sails, made by Pires de Lima in Portugal, offer the best combination of strength and performance.
  • Coordination and Delivery by J2 (Spain): As the contracting company, J2 has coordinated all activities and processes, ensuring timely and efficient delivery of the units. They also handle post-sale service to guarantee full customer satisfaction.

The 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE

"For J2, having the Navy compete in the Copa del Rey with one of our boats is a great honor and a validation of our work and dedication," says Company. "This participation not only tests the performance and quality of the J/99 sailboats in a high-level competitive environment but also highlights the trust the Navy has placed in our capabilities as suppliers and project coordinators. Personally, seeing the Navy compete with one of our sailboats in such a prestigious event is a source of immense pride. It is the tangible result of months of effort, collaboration, and commitment to excellence."

"The Copa del Rey is one of the most important competitions in the sailing world, and the fact that our boat is used in this context reinforces our position as industry leaders and motivates us to continue innovating and improving. Moreover, this competition offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of the J/99 in a challenging and competitive environment, which can open new opportunities and markets for both J2 and our international partners. Seeing our boats in action at an event of this magnitude is a testament to the hard work and passion that everyone at J2 puts into each project," he adds.

J2 Sailing and Juan Company: Innovation with Roots

J2 Sailing is a Mallorcan company specializing in the design and manufacture of high-performance sailboats. Juan Company and his team of sailors design, produce, and conduct sea trials with unique, custom-built units, guaranteeing maximum performance and safety in extreme conditions. The company represents the J/Boats shipyard in the Balearic Islands, as well as Petticrows (Dragon Class), and is one of the ten shipyards worldwide certified to manufacture Snipe class units.

"Boatbuilding has been an integral part of my life since before I was born. My father was already building boats, and I grew up immersed in the atmosphere of the Bahía Shipyard. I learned to ride a bike among the structures and hulls under construction, something unthinkable today. My training as a boatbuilder was the result of years of observation and an innate curiosity to understand every detail of the process. The shipyard was my school, and my father, my first teacher," he narrates.

After 20 years dedicated to aviation, Company felt the call to return to the nautical world, a passion that never disappeared. Together with his father, they began building J2 Snipes, combining the father's vast experience with the renewed enthusiasm and knowledge acquired by the son. This project was the first step in a new professional chapter.

His career also took him to King Marine, where he worked on the construction of two TP52s under the direction of Miguel Costa, one of the best project managers in the world. "This experience was invaluable; I learned about optimization and the pursuit of millimetric precision, lessons I apply in every current project," explains the CEO of J2 Sailing.

Five years ago, J2's facilities were inaugurated in the Son Castelló Industrial Estate, and since then, it has been a constant growth of projects and challenges. The company has tackled a wide variety of boats and developed innovations that continue to drive its daily growth.

"Every stage of my career has been a natural evolution, from learning in my father's shipyard to leading J2 in cutting-edge projects. This journey has allowed me to combine tradition and modernity, always maintaining the commitment to excellence that I learned from childhood," he concludes.
