Mallorcan Joshua Castro becomes champion at the Techno293 European Championship

Mallorcan Joshua Castro becomes champion at the Techno293 European Championship

5th November 2024 by Agencies

Joshua Castro was proclaimed champion on the weekend of November 1 in Athens (Greece) in the Under 13 category of the Techno293 windsurfing class. The competition was a challenge for the young sailors due to the strong wind conditions, with winds of up to 25 knots. His teammate Biel Martorell took the bronze.

About 270 athletes from across the continent participated in the event, completing a total of 13 races in various categories over a week of competition. In the Under 13 category, the youngest group of sailors, Joshua Castro from the San Antonio de la Playa Maritime Club (CMSAP) was the winner.

The second place went to Italian Vincenzo Clausi, and another Mallorcan, Biel Martorell, also from the Can Pastilla club, joined him on the podium in third position.

Joshua Castro had already achieved victory at the Techno293 World Championship ahead of his teammate Biel Martorell, who won the silver, in a competition held last July in Hungary. The regatta, which took place in the summer at Lake Balatonföldvár (Hungary), was contested with less wind, demonstrating that the two Mallorcans know how to adapt to all types of conditions.

The new continental champion returned home yesterday after a long journey and did so very tired because, as he explains, "it was a championship with a lot of wind, which is something I like, but the truth is that the sail was quite large for that wind and today everything hurts."

Joshua Castro has only been in this Under 13 category of Techno293 for two years and is now preparing to move up to a higher category: "I am going to move to Under 15 for the next two years and in the future I would like to sail on foil," points out the young sailor.

Albert Serra, windsurfing coach at CMSAP, highlights the evolution of Joshua Castro and Biel Martorell by noting that "the first season was about getting rolling, but this second one they have won almost everything."

Serra emphasizes the commitment of the Can Pastilla club to windsurfing with a team made up of a dozen very young boys. "Our quarry is the sailing school, where we teach sailing and see those who have potential. Now we have a couple of kids between 7 and 10 years old who are going to join the competitions," says the coach.
