MARE floods Palma's Paseo del Born with its exhibition Significar

"Significar," a dialogue between photography and words in the MARE Contest exhibition, brings us closer to the sea. MARE uses photography as its primary tool to spread awareness about the need to take action in conserving the Balearic Sea.

"Significar," the title of the exhibition, aims to familiarize the public with the richness, beauty, and fragility of the Balearic Sea through a dialogue between image and word. "Significar" is an exhibition open to multiple interpretations, as many as there are visitors.

This exhibition plays on the different meanings of words to create a dynamic interaction between viewers and the winning images from the 2023 MARE edition.

The result? An exhibition that seeks to contribute to the conservation of the Balearic Sea through humor, wordplay, and the dialogue between word and photograph.

Until July 14, it can be visited at the Paseo del Born in Palma. Now more than ever, during these hot days when millions of people visit us, the exhibition invites us to develop a new perspective toward our environment," organizers say. After its debut in Palma, it will visit Menorca, return to northern Mallorca, Formentera, and Ibiza, lasting throughout the summer.

"Today, we invite residents and visitors of the islands to immerse themselves in the incredible biodiversity of our environment through the MARE exhibition. It not only highlights the beauty of the Balearic Sea but also reminds us of the importance of our active participation in its conservation," explained Amador Garcias, Coordinator of MARE.

For those interested in participating in the 5th edition of MARE, the period for submitting photographs is open from July 1 to September 15. Up to 20 digital photographs related to the Balearic and Mediterranean Seas can be submitted. Each photograph should be accompanied by a message related to conservation.

MARE has established 3 participation categories: minors under 16 participate in JUVENIL, adults over 16 can participate as AMATEUR or EXPERT, depending on their level.

If you are over 16, you can submit your photographs in 6 categories: MARE Animalia, MARE Botanica, MARE Sapiens, MARE Denuntiare, MARE NOSTRUM, and MARE Popularis: Audience Award, where the winner is chosen by popular decision through public votes on the website www.marebalear.org.

Additionally, 6 honorary mentions will be awarded, 3 for Marine Protected Areas and 3 for Water Quality.

A total of €10,000 will be distributed among 26 prizes — as cash awards for Adult participants and underwater equipment for Juvenile participants.
