Maritime Rescue assisted 2,699 people in the Balearic Islands in 2023

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center in Palma de Mallorca, which depends on the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility through the Directorate General of Merchant Marine, coordinated last year the rescue, assistance or search of 2,699 people, 25% less than the previous year, in the 554 maritime actions attended.

The highest number of incidents was related to recreational boating with a decrease of 24%. In 2023, 305 recreational vessels, 17 merchant ships and 16 fishing vessels were involved in maritime incidents in Balearic waters.

Maritime Rescue coordinated the search for 78 irregular vessels and rescued 1,193 people, 7% less than the previous year, in Balearic waters.

As for Spain, Maritime Rescue assisted during 2023 a total of 61,824 people in its actions, 169 people assisted per day, in addition to the control of more than 313,000 vessels and the aerial and satellite surveillance of more than 253 million square kilometers of sea to prevent marine pollution.

During the year 2023, Maritime Rescue has monitored with its aircraft and satellites more than 253 million square kilometers of sea, an area equivalent to 499 times the national territory. It also attended 552 actions related to the protection of the marine environment.
