More than 5.000 kilos of waste was removed from the coastlines of the Balearic Islands only in June

The coastline cleaning service of the Sea and Water Cycle Council has removed a total of 5.692 kilos of waste of the shores of the balearic archipelago during the past month of June thanks to the kick-off of the campaign aimed at the prevention and sanitation of the water of the beaches and ‘calas’ of the Balearic Islands.

From the month of June until the end of September, twenty two ships work on the archipelago to remove tons of waste that accumulate at first line: seventeen of them are type ‘beach’ and five of type ‘coastline’, the latter being the bigger ones with a major capacity of  to move and collection of plastics. At Majorca they count with a total of ten boats, five of them work at Menorca, another five at Ibiza and two at Formentera.

The cleaning boats not only pick up floating waste, but also help remove big tree branches and dead animals, they also support in the containment of spills and clean-up areas that are not accessible from land.

Plastic is the material that has been collected with most frequency, representing 44,03 % of the waste collected. The rest of the common materials have been wood (32,54%), others (9,66%),  plants (7,82%), organic (6,14%) and oils (0,81%). Around the islands, at Majorca it has been collected 2.991 kilos; at Menorca, 1.258; at Ibiza, 1.114; and at Formentera, 328 kilos.

Furthermore, four notices were received (3 of 112 and of Marine Rescue, and one private individual) for the removal of waste, branches and fuel dispersion.
