The 49er and 49erFX World Championship ended yesterday in Marina Rubicón, Lanzarote, after six days of intense competition that brought together more than 240 sailors from 36 countries. The final day of the regatta took place with a NNW wind of medium intensity, between seven and 12 knots, and confirmed the Canary Islands regatta course as one of the best in the world.

The Club Nàutic S'Arenal sailor, Paula Barceló and her teammate, Támara Echegoyen faced the last race before the Medal Race from the provisional sixth place and with a 15th place in that leg they went into the final sixth but 21 points off the podium, so everything pointed to the fact that it was very difficult to get onto the podium. In the Medal Race they went out for everything, with the top of the table more concerned about scoring each other than finishing the regatta in first place. Paula and Támara were sixth, and in sixth place overall they remain in this World Championship.

Yesterday's podium was confirmed after the Medal Race for the Dutch Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz, who are the new 49erFX World Champions, thus making up for the silver medal they won at the last World Championship at home, in The Hague.

Spaniards Diego Botín and Florian Trittel went into the Medal Race in provisional fourth place overall but just 1.8 points off bronze and six points off silver. The Medal Race was decided in around 30 minutes in favor of the Polish crew, followed by the Dutch and Swiss, while Botin and Trittel managed to finish fourth, enough to take the overall lead and win the world bronze four months before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
