This intervention is part of the compensatory measures established in the Environmental Impact Statement of the Comprehensive Reform Project of the port of Fornells (Phase 2), with the goal of preserving one of the most important ecosystems in the Mediterranean.
The work has been awarded through a public tender to the company Tecnoambiente S.L., with a budget of 106,325.00 euros (excluding VAT) and a six-month execution period. During this time, 3,200 fragments of posidonia rhizome will be planted in an area delimited and designed with technical advice from the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA CSIC-UIB).
Once the planting is completed, monitoring will be carried out over several years to evaluate the evolution of the meadows. This task will be performed by IMEDEA, through a commission from Ports IB to the University Enterprise Foundation of the Balearic Islands, thus ensuring detailed scientific supervision that will guarantee the project's success.
Oceanic posidonia, endemic to the Mediterranean, is essential for the health of coastal ecosystems. It contributes to the absorption of CO2, stabilizes the seabed, and serves as a refuge for numerous species. However, its slow growth and high sensitivity to human impacts make active restoration essential to ensure its survival.
PortsIB reaffirms its commitment to environmental conservation through this project, which combines the restoration of marine habitats with public awareness. In addition to the planting work, informational signs will be installed on the promenade of Fornells, aiming to educate visitors about the importance of respecting the restoration areas and protecting this valuable ecosystem.
