Recital of the 6M Class in the Arenal Cup 2 at Club Nàutic S'Arenal

This past weekend, the Club Nàutic S’Arenal (CNA) hosted the second edition of the Arenal Cup, a new regatta created by the 6M class fleet, which for the second consecutive year has chosen the club as its training base in preparation for the next World Championship of this prestigious class.

The event took place from Friday, June 14 to Sunday, June 16, with two races scheduled per day. Friday saw the strongest winds, with a ‘embat’ wind ranging from 13 to 14 knots, gusting up to 16 knots. Saturday was characterized by slightly lighter winds, between 8 and 10 knots. On Sunday, the regatta started late due to the late arrival of the wind, a ‘embat’ of 10 to 12 knots, which prevented one of the two scheduled races from taking place. In total, five races were held over the three days of competition.

On Sunday, after the final races, the Arenal Cup 2, which saw participation from 8 boats and around fifty sailors, concluded with the award ceremony. The winner of the Arenal Cup 2 was the “Stella,” owned by Violeta Alvárez.

In a special circumstance, Saturday's races were included as part of the 45th Regata Fuerzas Armadas, organized that day in collaboration with the Spanish Navy for cruisers and dinghies (Optimist, Laser, Windsurf, Snipe, Latin Sail, and 6M). Thus, the day’s winning boat, the “Ginkgotoo,” owned by Jan Eckert of Switzerland, also received the Fuerzas Armadas trophy.

Socially, the club treated the crews to a dinner at the CNA Restaurant, where they enjoyed various Mallorcan specialties in a ‘variat’ style, with dishes like frito mallorquín or meatballs, followed by various grilled meats.

A few weeks ago, from May 23 to 25, the club hosted the Arenal Cup 1 with great success. It was the first of three competitions under this name taking place in CNA waters. These are windward/leeward courses of one-hour duration per race, with two races each day, for a total of 6. The Arenal Cup 3, which will conclude the series, is scheduled from July 12 to 14. The Arenal Cup regattas are part of the Mallorca Series for the 6M class, comprising a total of five events with an overall podium at the end.

For the second consecutive year, top sailors of the prestigious 6M class have chosen the CNA for their training. Last year, 7 boats from 5 different nationalities (Spain, Sweden, Germany, United Kingdom, and Finland) with a crew of 5 made the club their training base, competing in regattas such as the Trofeo Princesa Sofía or Palmavela, and also participating in the Marinepool Summer Cup at the CNA. This year, 10 boats and about fifty sailors have made the CNA their training base in preparation for the World Championship. They will remain at the CNA until mid-July, when they will move to Sanxenxo to compete in the European Championship of their class at the end of September.

“It is a privilege to have these incredible sailors at the club, showcasing their racing prowess,” says Alex Duran, event coordinator at CNA. “It’s amazing to watch them sail: as the saying goes, even the worst among them makes watches,” says Duran, emphasizing that “they have already confirmed that they will return next year for their winter training base at the CNA, which is a great honor for us.”
