The Consell de Mallorca has launched the 2024 Volta a Mallorca. The president of the island's institution, Llorenç Galmés, embarked on the Balear this Friday, July 26, to complete the first leg of the journey, sailing to Portocolom.
STAY UP TO DATE OF WHAT WE DO AND RECEIVE OUR NEWSLETTERThis marks the start of the commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Santanyí expedition, which will be carried out with nine traditional Mallorcan boats. "The number of participating boats is limited to match the original 1899 expedition," detailed Galmés.
Throughout the entire journey, eight traditional boats will participate permanently: l’Alzina, el Único, el Brando, la Mantellina, l’Alconassar, la Rata, el Sant Miquel, and el Posidònia. Additional traditional boats such as the Balear, the Cala Sarral, and the Besitos will join for specific segments.
The journey starting this Friday from Cala Figuera will continue to Portocolom, Porto Cristo, Cala Ratjada, Alcúdia, Sóller, Banyalbufar, and Andratx, concluding in Palma on August 2. The Consell de Mallorca organizes this significant summer nautical event through the Museu Marítim de Mallorca to honor the remarkable feat of the nine members of the Reial Gremi d'Assadolladors, who circumnavigated Mallorca aboard the llaüt San Miquel in 1899.
Moreover, the 2024 Volta Mallorca program includes a series of complementary cultural and heritage activities for Mallorca's residents to enjoy a well-rounded experience. For instance, a benefit concert by Jansky at the Coves del Drach has been organized for this Friday, and on Sunday, Mar Grimalt will perform at the Coves d'Artà. Both concerts will benefit the Amès Foundation, thanks to a collaboration agreement signed this week between the Consell de Mallorca and the foundation.
This initiative highlights Mallorca's heritage, culture, and gastronomy, explained President Llorenç Galmés.
