The Balearic Port Authority (APB) has confirmed that there is a proposal for the expansion of the Port of Palma currently under study for subsequent consensus and approval by public administrations, business entities, unions, and the rest of the port community.
STAY UP TO DATE OF WHAT WE DO AND RECEIVE OUR NEWSLETTERThis statement from the APB comes in response to accusations from the PSIB of bringing this project to the Board of Directors this Wednesday without "consensus" and with "secrecy." In a statement, the APB indicated that there is a proposal for a plan for the Port of Palma on the table, which includes several alternatives for reordering port uses and activities within the sheltered waters of the port (Zone I).
Additionally, they emphasized that the reorganization and modernization of the port aim to strike a "balance" between port uses and space utilization. The goal is to improve maritime traffic and enhance the boat repair and maintenance industry.
The new reorganization proposal includes increased land area dedicated to the boat repair and maintenance industry in the West Dike area. Thus, the space allocated for regular freight traffic remains "practically the same" to "ensure the simultaneity of port operations, their safety, and the supply of the population in light of anticipated future demands."
The APB explained that they are considering developing a new area dedicated to recreational boating but have ruled out its use for megayachts.
According to the APB, one of the main improvements being studied is to strengthen areas designated for the city, where spaces related to culture, training, leisure, and sports would be developed. Specifically, they are considering the possibility of creating a municipal school for nautical sports.
Finally, the project proposes reducing the space used for cruise ship traffic and suggests concentrating it exclusively in the Poniente-Paraires docks.
