The Balearic Islands will have this year 50 beaches in the ‘Red Balear’ of beaches without smoke, 10 more from the last campaign. The Muro beach is one of the 10 beaches incorporated to this campaign of healthy beaches 2024, to which add as well the beach of Puerto de Sant Miquel, in the municipality of San Juan of Labritja and eight beaches more in the municipality of Manacor.

There are already 50 beaches that are part of the ‘Red Balear’ of smoke-free beaches, an initiative promoted by the Regional Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate of Mental Health, and the Regional Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle, which aims to prevent smoking in the marked areas, promote healthy habits and raise awareness among the population about the importance of not leaving waste in natural areas.

On the other hand, tobacco waste contains more than seven thousand toxic chemical substances that poison the environment. Cigarette butts are the most commonly found waste among marine litter. In this sense, Carlos Simarro, general director of Costas y Litoral, explained during the event that the Conselleria del Mar is committed to protecting the environment and promoting health. "This initiative in Playa de Muro reflects this commitment, seeking to raise awareness about the impact of smoking on both health and our natural spaces," said Simarro, adding that "it is a measure that in addition to benefiting non-smokers, promotes greater coexistence and respect for the environment. It is an important step towards a healthier and more sustainable future for everyone".

These beaches, which are part of the awareness campaign 'Smoke-free beaches, healthy beaches 2024' install signs at the accesses to inform users of this new cataloging and invite them to collaborate in maintaining the beaches free of smoke and waste.
