This Friday, February 28, marked the start of the Balearic Optimist Championship at Club Nàutic S'Arenal (CNA), featuring 86 sailors from clubs across Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza, who had qualified through four regattas held between September and November 2024.
STAY UP TO DATE OF WHAT WE DO AND RECEIVE OUR NEWSLETTERThe Balearic Championship is notably significant as it is one of three scoring events, alongside the Federation Cup held at CN Sa Ràpita in late November, and the School Finals set for March at CN S'Estanyol. These events determine which Balearic sailors will participate in the upcoming national competitions, thus deciding who will represent the Balearics in the Spanish Championship and Cup.
The first day of the Balearic Optimist Championship was characterized by unstable northwesterly winds, with varying intensity and direction, challenging the Regatta Committee. Due to these weather conditions, the first race, originally scheduled for noon, did not conclude until 3 PM, allowing only two of the three planned heats to be completed on this day.
Leading the overall standings after the first day is Tomás Salvà (CNA), victorious in both of the day's races, followed by under-11 sailor Mario Coronado (CMSAP) and Frances Jaume (CNA). The competition will continue on Saturday and Sunday, with three heats each day starting at noon. The Balearic Optimist Championship will conclude on Sunday afternoon with the traditional award ceremony.
