The mollusc, which is difficult to find, was the novelty for the students taking part in the Setmana del Mar. This encounter is good news for the marine ecosystem, as it indicates a good quality of the water in which they live.

This giant mollusc is a valuable bio-indicator of water quality and healthy ecosystems. Their habitat is the Posidonia oceanica meadows, to which they cling when the rock is in good condition. The variety found is called Pinna rudis, which has been reproducing more and more in recent years.
It is worth noting that, since 2016, there has been a massive mortality in the Mediterranean of the very similar Pinna nobilis species. In fact, both species are hybridizing on their own, which may save the species, in a wonderful episode of cooperation.
If we find any of these bivalves, both Pinna nobilis and Pinna rudis, it is important to let the scientists know and send a photo and approximate location to the Nacras Project of the Observers of the Sea platform.
