The event, which the club has been celebrating for over a quarter of a century and has been sponsored for more than a decade by the iconic fishing gear store Can Calicó, featured the participation of 24 boats and nearly fifty fishermen, including skippers and crews.
“This year, there has been a 25% increase in participation in the fishing events, thanks to the addition of new boats, skippers, and guests,” celebrates Toni Moreno, CNA's Fishing spokesperson, who highlights the "great participation" in this last test and the "summery weather" enjoyed by the attendees.
Moreno reminds that the last event of the year for the Fishing Section will be the Christmas Dinner, to be held on December 14 in what will then be a renovated Restaurant, with a hundred guests including skippers, crew members, and invitees, along with the Section team and the CNA Board of Directors. "We will celebrate the year and reaffirm our enthusiasm for the coming year, of which we will soon reveal some news," he anticipates.
Returning to the Squid Trophy Can Calicó, the day began at 3 PM, when the participants gathered at the CNA facilities to receive the final instructions before setting sail. The competition took place between 4 PM and 7:30 PM, during which the boats fished in search of the best catches. Fishing was only allowed in an area delimited by the organization and participants could only use rods and squid jigs, with the use of any other type of tool or technique prohibited. At the end, the catches were weighed at the club’s port, where the awards ceremony for the winning teams was held.
"The catches, in general, were not very abundant, due to the season we are in, when the squid is just beginning to come in and we are not yet at the peak. The winners caught 10 units," details Moreno. "As an anecdote, one of the participating boats suffered a rudder malfunction and had to return to port under the watchful eye of the club's dock staff, although it managed to do so on its own," he explains.
The Squid Trophy Can Calicó 2024 once again brought together a large group of recreational fishing enthusiasts, establishing itself as one of the unmissable dates in the Mallorcan nautical calendar. Thanks to the impeccable organization of the Club Nàutic S’Arenal and the support of Can Calicó, the event closed its edition with great success, reaffirming the importance of such initiatives for promoting the maritime traditions of the island.
