The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands explained that the aim is to open a space for dialogue in order to define a roadmap for all participants. To this end, smaller working groups will be formed, under the coordination of a technical committee, which will be responsible for channelling the reflections, debates and proposals that are put forward and for drawing up a final document that will be translated into this social and political pact for the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the Balearic Islands. "We are not coming with a closed document, subject only to minor changes, but we want to start from scratch," he assured.

Prohens insisted on the work that the Government will carry out to ensure that decisions are made with objective data, based on rigorous and realistic analyses. One of the measures to be implemented will be an opinion study, a macro-survey, on tourist congestion, to find out what residents of the Balearic Islands think about this issue. Studies will also be carried out on the carrying capacity of natural areas.

The technical coordinator of the Pact will be the professor of Applied Economics and director of the Impulsa Foundation, Toni Riera.

The meeting was attended by more than 140 entities, including nautical entities, representatives of trade unions, employers, economic sectors, economic circles, chambers of commerce, professional associations and groups, the Impulsa Foundation, the University of the Balearic Islands, various educational and training institutions, and research centers. Also taking part were civil society organizations, representatives of local residents, representatives of environmental organizations, representatives of the consular corps, of the different administrations, of the four island councils, of the town councils and of the Spanish Government Delegation, as well as of the different political forces.

Prohens stated that now is the time to make courageous decisions, with a transformation of the economic model together with society as a whole. "I am aware that this change will not come in a year or two, but we have to lay the foundations for a change of direction for the Balearic Islands. We must not deceive ourselves, it will be complex and it will not be easy, but we owe it to society, we have to make this effort," he said.

"Let there be no mistake, this social and political pact is not against any sector or any activity: it is not about looking for culprits or criminalising anyone", she added.

The president explained that in the coming weeks the participants will be informed of the steps that will be taken to begin work, with the aim of having a consensus document in the coming months.
