The City Maritime Museum has been located in Ses Voltes since September 2020 and does not have a fire prevention system or an evacuation plan, although it receives visits from schools and associations every week.

The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councilor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, detected this anomaly when she received the report on the state of execution of the works. She regrets that "since its transfer to Ses Voltes, more than three years ago, the Maritime Museum of Mallorca has not been a safe place" and criticizes the fact that "the previous government team did not check that everything was in order before opening it".

Roca explains that this report was resolved a few days ago and details that "the building does not have a fire prevention system or an evacuation plan, which means that the Palma headquarters must be closed until this problem is resolved". Fortunately, Antònia Roca pointed out, "no accidents or disasters have been reported, but we must remember that more than 20,000 people who have visited the museum in recent years have been put at risk".

The opening hours of the Maritime Museum of Sóller will be extended for the duration of the works.

It is estimated that the work will take a few months, and that the Ses Voltes museum will be able to reopen before the summer season. Meanwhile, the Councillor for Culture and Heritage explained that "the opening hours of the Maritime Museum of Sóller will be extended to cater for visitors who wish to visit the museum, and all the visits that were already established will be relocated".

This week, for example, Antònia Roca said that guided tours were scheduled for the Apropa Cultura Association, the occupational service and the CEIP Santa Catalina school in Palma: "we cannot allow the doors of the Palma Maritime Museum to remain open if it is not a safe space. We regret the inconvenience, but safety is the most important thing of all. We will now do everything possible to adapt the building to the regulations before the season starts", explained the vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca.

The current opening hours of the Maritime Museum of Sóller are from Thursday to Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and will now be modified: from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm.

The Consell de Mallorca is now studying the possibility of relocating the workers of the Palma headquarters of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca to other premises of the island institution.

State of progress of the works

Work on the Palma headquarters of the Maritime Museum of Mallorca began last January, and the previous governing team of the Consell de Mallorca announced that it would last a maximum of six months.

During this year, the rooms and facilities have been adapted to comply with the law of universal accessibility, and air conditioning and ventilation have been installed in the rooms to reduce humidity problems.

Initially, the entrances and exits were also to be adapted with automatic doors, but there have been modifications to the project and this adaptation will be made in the next process, which is the museography.
