The Consell of Mallorca and the Sant Pere de Palma fishermen's guild signed a collaboration agreement this Wednesday to promote, preserve, and recover the maritime and fishing heritage of the island. The objective, explained Vice President and Minister of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, is "to publicize the joint actions that will be organized to promote initiatives and programs for the conservation and improvement of the island's maritime and port heritage and all the history surrounding it."

The agreement lasts for four years, extendable for another four years. During this period, more joint actions will be planned to raise awareness of this island's maritime cultural heritage among young people and those at risk of social exclusion.

In the past school year, the Consorcio del Museu Marítim and the Sant Pere de Palma fishermen's guild launched an activity called ‘La llotja de peix, un cop al mes’. This involved scheduled school group visits every Wednesday to the fishing pier and the Palma market to learn about different marine species. Due to the positive reception of this initiative, which received a large number of requests, both parties decided to collaborate in the future to develop such activities to transmit and recover the maritime cultural heritage of Mallorca.

The activity program will take place during the school year to avoid the hotter months and will be aimed at two groups: primary and secondary school groups from all over the island of Mallorca, and people at risk of social exclusion or with disabilities from the Apropa Cultura association. Additionally, it will include a variety of actions, from creating educational materials related to local and seasonal fishing to ‘la setmana blava’, a week dedicated to maritime content aimed at schools.
