The Copa del Rey MAPFRE crowns the winners of 2023 already thinking of the 42nd edition

The 41 Copa del Rey MAPFRE has left behind an intense final journey which has decided the winner of the eight categories and proclaimed absolut champions of the italian “Scugnizza” and the majorcan “Patakín”.

The Bay of Palma presented itself in the best way possible to end  the 41st edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. An intense final journey, sixth of the week, allowed all the categories to say goodbye to the competition, the fleet of a hundred boats of 16 nationalities enjoyed a great deal of weather conditions that challenged them to adapt their crew members. Eight teams achieved victory in the categories, five of them revalidated their title and two were proclaimed the two absolute winners.

The winner of Majorica ORC 1 was the “Palibex - Elena Nova” of Javier Sanz and Christian Plump, sponsored by Daniel Cuevas. After winning the qualifying series, the boat of RCNP led all the way through the Final Series until taking away the title. In second position finished “Aifos”  of the Spanish Navy, results that represent the King Don Felipe as sponsor for the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. Felipe VI has accomplished to make one of the bests positions in the fourth place in 2021 as kin and in 2008 as prince. The podium was completed with the italian of “Lisa R”.

At Majorica ORC 2, the “Teatro del Soho Caixabank” did not have any persecuters. The boat was led by Javier Banderas, sponsored by Daniel Cuevas and the tactics of Luis Doreste, they won 11 races, chasing their third consecutive title at ORC 2. In second place, by 13 points, finished the “Seabery Dralion” of Basilio Marquínez, with a draw with “Maverta” of Pedro Gil.

At Majorica ORC 3, the “Laplaza Assesors”  of Alexandre Laplaza, which went out to sea by five points of the leader and with proper options to fight for the title, collided with the netherland “Yellow Rose”  in the first race, which resulted with the elimination of both of them. The “Scugnizza”  of Vicenzo and Enzo de Blasio revalidated their title from 2022 with the most points of the fleet; 22 points. He was accompanied at the podium by the spanish teams: “Concesur - 50 años” and “Tanit IV Medilevel”.

To define the champion of Majorica ORC 4 it was needed to use a calculator. The classification of 12 midterms demonstrated the same points between the “Just the Job”  of Scott Beattie and “Lassal” of Gonzalo Calvo, resulting in the draw in favor of the British ship. Third place was taken by the “Ybarra-Befesa”  of Arturo Montes.

In the two categories of the monotypes ClubSwan won the champions of 2022. At ClubSwan 50, the “Hatari” of the german Marcus Brennecke came back from fourth place after the Final Series in which he consolidated second consecutive title at Palma. Six of the nine vessels achieved partial victories, demonstrating the equality of the fleet. In second place finished the german “NiRamo” of Sonke Meier and third the italian “Vitamina”  of Andrea Lacorte.

At ClubSwan 42 won “Nadir”  of Pedro Vaquer, champion of 2022. The majorcan team maintained an intense duel during the whole week with “Pez de Abril” of José María Meseguer, the best of the first half of the championship, which took advantage of the six points of the final count. In third place was “Koyré-Spirit of Nerina”  of the italian Mirko Bargolini.

The battle for the title of Majorca Sotheby’s Women’s Cup was prolonged until the last 14 races contested. After being the main character of the best of the fleet of the Final Series, “Team RCNP Balearia” of the local María Bover was imposed by three points in the exciting duel with “Dorsia Covirán” of Nuria Sánchez, revalidating her title of 2022 in the feminine category. In third place finished “Etnia Barcelona - Zona Norte” of Eva González.

At Herbalife J70 there was a change of protagonism between two teams during the week. Finally “Patakín” of Luis Albert Solana took the title, also of RCNP, who knew how to take advantage of the final races (with a first and second position) to have a triumph with five points of advantage over “Usana - Les Roches” of Pepequín Orbaneja. Third was “Hang Ten”  of Mon Cañellas.

Other than giving out the titles of the eight categories, the Copa del Rey MAPFRE awards Trophy MAPFRE to two absolute winners: on one hand, the best competed in real time (the monotypes of ClubSwan, J/70 and J/80) and on the other hand, the best in compensated time (ORC). The combination of the results of the absolute winners of the 41 Copa del REy MAPFRE of “Patakín” in the Monotype Division and “Scugnizza” of the Handicap Division.

After crowning the winner of this 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE, the Real CLub Náutico of Palma has posted the pre Announcement of the Regatta for the next edition, which will be disputed at the Bay of Palma between the 27th of July and the 3rd of August of 2024.

The categories of ClubSwan50, CLubSwan42, J70, women’s Cup and the ships with ORC certificate will be divided in the categories of 0, 1, 2 and 3, as the organizing committee specifies the document- it will be called upon again at the Bay of Palma between the 27th of July and 3rd of August of 2024, the first two days will be reserved for registration and measurement, the first starting horn for Monday 29th for all categories.

The registration period will begin at the moment of the Announcement of the Regatta, expected before the 15th of January of 2024.
