The counselor of the Sea ensures that the protection of the sea has to be a common goal

The Councilor of the Sea and Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente, participated this Tuesday in the presentation of the Balearic Blue Pact project.

More than 150 entities and companies have adhered to the Balearic Blue Pact and it was created with the aim of adopting measures for marine conservation.

Lafuente has assured that the care and protection of the sea has to be a common objective of all citizens. "We have to work together. Civil society, companies, the economic sector and the administration to conserve and improve the maritime environment. Only in this way, if we go in the same direction, we will succeed," he said. 

For this reason, the Councilor for the Sea and Water Cycle has insisted on the joint work of all parties. "If only the administration acts, with the imposition of rules and surveillance activity, we will not achieve the results we expect," he said. 

Therefore, he said that the department will fight to involve and actively participate in the care of the sea, "is what makes us economically attractive, without forgetting the residents, seeking a balance so that they can also enjoy the environment," explained the councilor.

Specifically, the Balearic Blue Pact asks the political parties to assume 5 commitments with the sea and the Balearic coast in their government programs and parliamentary action: 

1. To create a network of marine sanctuaries that will cover 10% of the Balearic sea. 

2. To implement plans for the conservation and recovery of vulnerable habitats and species. 

3. To guarantee sustainable fishing and to put an end to poaching and fraudulent trade. 

4. Improve the quality of our coastal waters. 

5. To invest a minimum of 1% of public budgets in marine conservation.
