STAY UP TO DATE OF WHAT WE DO AND RECEIVE OUR NEWSLETTERThe national fleet consists of eight boats with athletes from the yacht clubs, maritime and regatta clubs of Puerto Portals, Pollença, Palma, Can Pastilla, Arenal, Vilassar de Mar, Alicante, Arrecife and Santander.
This Thursday, after the skippers' meeting, the first two races will take place from noon onwards. The competition will continue until Sunday, February 25th, with two races per day.
If the organization manages to complete the program, something that depends on the weather, the Mediterranean Cup will consist of eight races. On the opening day, southerly winds of between 14 and 20 knots are expected. On Friday, the situation will be somewhat more complicated, since gusts of almost 30 knots from the NW are forecast. The forecasts indicate that Saturday and Sunday could be good days for sailing.
The competition format will be identical to that of the Puerto Portals Winter Series, which concluded a month ago with the comfortable victory of the Australian Dragon "Yeah Nah", owned by Jan Eckert, who is the great favorite to win the Mediterranean Cup, a title he won last year in a tight final with the Austrian "Basic Lógic", owned by Werner Deuring.
The national boat to beat is Jorge Forteza's "Mr. Nova", runner-up in the Winter Series and reigning champion of the Balearic Islands.
Puerto Portals has been for years the Spanish capital of the Dragon class and one of the European clubs of reference. The fleet settled in Mallorca is joined by numerous boats from different parts of the continent.
The Winter Series and the Mediterranean Cup -events that are part of the annual calendar of Puerto Portals- have undoubtedly contributed to the loyalty of a good number of shipowners. This has also been helped by the excellent conditions offered by the Bay of Palma throughout the year and the hospitality of the organizing entity.
