In order to evaluate the progress of this experiment, they will analyze the traps that they will be collecting periodically throughout the course. “As the weeks go by, they will colonize (primary succession) and after a couple of months, we will take one out to clean it and put it back in the water (secondary succession) to compare which grows faster, a primary or a secondary one,” Ripoll explained.
Once the activity was finished, the Captain of the Port, José María Marroig, has explained in detail the activities that the Marina Port of Mallorca will do to foment the taking care of the environment between the clients and promote the care of the sea.
Among the activities that most caught their attention was the use of the Seabin, the litter bin that collects plastics from the sea and has a system capable of filtering up to 25,000 Lph (liters per hour), with the capacity to clean 1.5 kg of plastics and rubbish per day. They were also curious about the system of anti-pollution barriers that the marina has to deploy in the event of a spill at sea.
At the end of the visit and to regain strength before returning to class, the students enjoyed a snack and said goodbye until the next visit.
In line with its environmental policy, Marina Port de Mallorca regularly carries out activities related to the promotion and preservation of the environment and this is one more of the actions for which it holds environmental accreditations such as the Blue Flag, registration in the Carbon Footprint Register, EMAS, as well as its commitment to Global Compact.
