The fight for the iQFOiL world title starts in Lanzarote

Marina Rubicón is busy with the first Lanzarote International Regatta 2024 World Championship. After three days of registration confirmation, equipment checks and an official training test on Sunday, today, Monday 29th January, the fight for the world title in iQFOiL, the Olympic windsurfing class, begins in Canary Islands waters.

There will be a total of six intense days of competition in which the races will be in Race Course, Slalom or Marathon format. The championship will consist of two phases: once the qualifying phase is over, the competitors will start sailing divided into gold and silver fleets. Only the top ten will enter the exciting last day on Saturday, with the quarter finals, semi finals and a Grand Final with only three participants in which the first to cross the finish line wins, so the title will not be decided until the last moment adding more excitement to the already spectacular flying board class.

Among the 212 confirmed participants after the final registration - in addition to all the big names in the class - there are 13 Spaniards, including 4 Balearic sailors such as the male representative in iQFOiL in Paris 2024 and sailor from Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita, Nacho Baltasar and the "iqfoilers" from Club Nàutic S'Arenal, Bernat Tomàs, Andrea Torres and Bárbara Winau.

La importancia de este campeonato del mundo, además de por el hecho de ser un Mundial, reside en que está en juego una plaza de país para cada categoría en el caso de las naciones europeas. Dinamarca parte como favorita en esta lucha, con Lituania como principal rival.

En el otro lado de la balanza están también los equipos que, ya con plaza de país ganada y representante decidido, como es el caso de España, quieren hacer un buen puesto en una cita tan importante como es un Mundial a seis meses de unos JJ.OO. 

En lo que respecta al Comité de Regata, éste estará liderado por la experimentada Ewa Jodlowska, quien ya fue oficial de RS:X en los JJ.OO. de Tokio y Río. La polaca repite por cuarta vez como Oficial Principal en un Mundial, tantas veces como Mundiales se han celebrado desde el nacimiento de la clase.
