The hard weather conditions adjust to fight for the title of the 52 SUPER SERIES

A mix of winds around 20 knots and waves of more than two meters provoked severe damages of the two maximum candidates of the title of the 52 SUPER SERIES.

“Provezza” missed all three races of the day, but continued to lead the circuit, "Platoon" missed the first two and moved to within six points of the leader, and "Phoenix" consolidated its first position as the top contender to win the last event of the season.

The great final of the 52 SUPER SERIES 2023 continues increasing in excitement. After a blank opening day due to a lack of wind and a severe thunderstorm, and three races on an intense second day, the third day presented tough conditions that led to dramatic changes in the battle for the season title.

The journey started with the withdrawal of “Platoon” before beginning the first procedure of the exit line due to damages on the rig. The German boat (second of the 52 SUPER SERIES) seemed to say goodbye to their aspirations to the title. But a dramatic turn of events happened, the leader of the circuit and the maximum opponent “Platoon” , the Turkish “Provezza” , was also out of the battle just seconds after beginning the first race.

The first start of the day was with ten teams due to the withdrawal of "Platoon" and was reduced to nine when "Provezza" stopped short at the start of the course. A delamination endangered the integrity of the rig and the safety of the crew and they were discharged. Meanwhile, the race was led by four different teams. “Gladiator”  started the last part as head team, but “Phoenix” got the reading of the battle field right and overtook his rival on the final approach to the finish at opposite ends of the course. Just two seconds separated the two boats at the finish line. Third was the American "Sled". Both "Platoon" and "Provezza" added 12 points to their score sheets.

In the second race, still with nine boats, “Sled” accomplished to still be the leader in the first of the four initial sections of the course, but "Phoenix" chose the favored side again on the first downwind leg to claim a lead that they would not relinquish. The boat of helmsman Tony Norris and tactician Ed Baird signed their third consecutive partial victory, demarcating the lead in the provisional ahead of the last race of the day. They would be followed at the finish by "Sled" and "Interlodge". Once again, 12 points for each of the absentees.

The third and final score sheet started with the re-incorporation of “Platoon” . Its land team made a reparation in record time that supposed the possibility to take away valuable points from “Provezza”  facing the fight for the title of the 52 SUPER SERIES 2023. The race was marked by the duel between “Gladiator” and “Quantum Racing powered by American Magic” , that finally won the British by one second in a very tight approach to the finish line. "Platoon" signed a valuable third that was equivalent to only six points behind the leader "Provezza", who returned to 12 points.
