The mayor of the capital of Ibiza, Rafael Triguero, and the fourth deputy mayor and councilor for the Environment, Jordi Grivé, attended the Mayors and Companies Forum of the Intelligent Cities Challenge program, promoted by the European Commission, held this March 5 and 6 in Brussels, the council reported in a note.

There, they received the award from the European program Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) for this project, which has been presented by the capital of Ibiza as one of the Local Green Deals that promote the use of innovative technologies to improve economic competitiveness and the quality of life of the citizens, aligned with environmental strategies.

The mayor of Ibiza, Rafael Triguero, highlighted that the City Council's commitment to the preservation of posidonia is "undeniable" and that they share the award with the entity driving the project, which has "guaranteed" municipal support.

Oscar Caro, president of the Blue Life Foundation, noted that "giving visibility" in Europe to these actions to "protect the lung" of the Mediterranean helps to show a "new face" of the city of Ibiza and the whole island.

He also insisted that it highlights the value of public-private collaboration, innovation, science, and the work of the entire network of entities that cooperate to preserve posidonia.

'Restoration of Posidonia Meadows and Conservation of the Mediterranean Marine Ecosystem' is the first national pilot project developed in Ibiza. It started in September 2023, in the swimming channel area of Puig des Molins, to recover meadows impacted by human action.

The goal is to reforest, within a period of 5 years, the posidonia meadows, also involving citizen participation and promoting regenerative tourism.

The project also includes collaboration from CSIC-Imedea, the Balearic Government, Sacyr Foundation, BIBO Park, and Banco Santander Foundation.
