This was announced in a press release following a visit to the area by the councillor for the sea, Juan Manuel Lafuente, accompanied by the director general of Ports and Maritime Transport, Antoni Mercant, and the manager of PortsIB, Kiko Villalonga.

This visit has been carried out to see first-hand the conditions othe set of 'escars' - maritime huts - that will be rehabilitated to improve and preserve its ‘valuable maritime heritage’.

The mayoress of Felanitx, Catalina Soler, was in charge of explaining the specific details and current problems of the port to the Conselleria's work team, and the detailed action plans for the upcoming refurbishment were discussed.

The project, scheduled to begin after the summer period of 2024, will be divided into two phases. The first, with a material execution and tendering budget of 9.8 million euros, will focus on a comprehensive rehabilitation of the huts-wharf complexes and the refurbishment of the urbanization of various parts of the port.

This stage, which is expected to last about 18 months, will be devoted to restoring and improving these ‘emblematic’ structures, by preserving as much as possible of their original volume, the architectural elements of which they are composed and the traditional construction methods.

‘The goal is to guarantee stability and durability, to respect the initial aesthetics and to ensure harmonious integration into the existing landscape,’ the ministry said.

The second phase will tackle the repair of cracking and spalling on several quays in the port, with a budget of 1.3 million euros.

This work, scheduled for completion in six months, is essential to ensure the long-term safety and operability of the port. These efforts are designed to significantly improve the safety of the infrastructure, while maintaining ‘its characteristic charm’ and respecting its traditional architecture.

The planned rehabilitation aims to preserve the port's architectural heritage and will also improve its infrastructure to support future tourism and commercial demands, thereby boosting local economic development and reinforcing Portocolom's role as a vital center for shipping and tourism in the region.
