The decision will be known soon since the World Championship, being held this year in Buenos Aires from October 26 to November 3, allows the international body to deliberate while 3 crews from the Mahón Maritime Club and one sailor participate in the event.
There is no doubt that, in sporting terms, the Mahón Maritime Club is experiencing one of its best moments in its more than 125-year history and aims to enhance it by hosting one of the most important events in the world of sailing, scheduled from September 19 to 26, 2026, with 9 races.
For this purpose, the Club has created a presentation document that highlights the port and its high docking capacity for participants, the esplanade area and access ramps to the water, sailing conditions, safety areas, and the extensive network of accommodations available on the island.
The Mahón Maritime Club has extensive experience in organizing national and international events. It hosted the Spanish Championship of Snipe in 1955 and of the Europa class in 2011. It has held the Snipe Spain Cup in 1988 and 2001, as well as the Europa class in 2004. It also hosted the Snipe European Championship in 1994 and the Farr40 in 2006, as well as the IMS Cruiser World Championship in 2005, the Spain Cup – Alfonso XIII Trophy of Cruiser in 1987, the VII Admiral Count of Barcelona Trophy of Classic Yachts in 1991, the Menorca Clubswan 50 Europeans in 2023, the 52 Super Series Royal Cup in 2023, as well as the 52 Super Series Sailing Week in 2016, 2017, and 2019, and the Menorca Maxi Regatta in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, since 1996, the Menorca – Sant Joan Trofe Alfonso XIII Regatta has been held, and since 2003, the King’s Cup of Classic Sailing – Classic Sailing Menorca.
In terms of achievements, the Club has seen its athletes participate in the Barcelona 92 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics; 2 golds, 3 silvers, and 7 bronzes in World Championships; 13 golds, 11 silvers, and 12 bronzes in European Championships; 3 silvers and 3 bronzes in European Cups; 38 golds, 39 silvers, and 11 bronzes in Spanish Championships; 1 gold and 2 silvers in Iberian Championships; 20 golds, 13 silvers, and 3 bronzes in Spanish Cups and 17 golds and 1 bronze in King’s Cups.
“Hosting the Snipe Class World Championship would be another step in consolidating the Snipe Class as a historic class within the Club and is a great opportunity for the Mahón Maritime Club and for Menorca. In recent years, a lot of effort has been put into positioning the island and the port of Mahón as a nautical reference both competitively and touristically,” evaluates the president of the Club, Basilio Ferrer.
