15th July 2024 by Agencies

The Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the coastlines and shores of the Balearic Islands during the presentation of a campaign in collaboration with the Federation of Associations and Nautical Activities for Environmental Issues (FANMED). This campaign aims to promote responsible behavior among sailors and ensure the conservation of our marine environment.

This initiative includes the distribution of stickers and leaflets with QR codes that direct users to educational videos on good nautical practices, available in five languages: Catalan, Spanish, German, English, and French.

The Director General of Ports and Maritime Transport, Antoni Mercant, emphasized the importance of collaboration among all parties involved to ensure the protection of the coastline: "Exactly one year ago, we presented this FANMED video in collaboration with Ports IB, a project that was disseminated through the nautical clubs and facilities of the Balearic Islands to raise awareness among users. Now, our intention is to also reach all recreational or sports boats operated for profit, including foreign tourists, which is why the campaign has been expanded to five languages."

The Director General also highlighted that "the collaboration between the Government and FANMED remains strong" and that work continues "in seeking useful tools for the nautical sector to keep improving in all those aspects where user behavior at sea has shown room for improvement."

The new campaign focuses on the distribution of stickers and leaflets with QR codes in different languages that link to a video on good nautical practices. These materials are designed for use on both rental and private boats. The simplicity and appeal of QR codes can be a useful tool for those not regularly engaged in sailing, allowing the captain or owner to involve users in understanding what it means to navigate and the most appropriate behaviors in this environment.

This initiative is a joint effort to promote responsible and sustainable use of the marine environment, ensuring the protection of our coasts and the quality of the natural environment of the Balearic Islands.
