550 sailors from 24 countries have participated this weekend in the 34th International Vila de Palamós Optimist Trophy-18 Nations Cup. A competition in which 25 sailors from the Balearic Islands participated and in which Amalia Coll, from Club Nàutic S'Arenal was crowned female runner-up.
STAY UP TO DATE OF WHAT WE DO AND RECEIVE OUR NEWSLETTERA total of nine races were held, five qualifying races and four Final Series, in a last day in which the wind came in after 13 hours, but in which the Race Committee gave a total of 20 starts, two in each of the five groups, with a wind between 9 and 12 knots of intensity.
The Tarragona Iker Múgica (CN Cambrils) is the new and brand new overall winner of the 34th International Vila de Palamós Optimist Trophy-18 Nations Cup. He was accompanied on the podium by the also Spanish Joan Domingo (CN Cambrils), second and Pepe Garcia Grandille (RCN Barcelona), third.
It was an exciting final as Domingo started as leader with a one point advantage over Múgica, so the fight between club mates was served. Múgica could not make a single mistake, as his discard was a 55. And so it was, the one who already started as a great favorite made two second places, while Domingo made a 5 and a 16, which relegated him to second place.
From then on the fight was focused on the third position, which would finally be taken by Pepe Garcia Grandille from Barcelona, after getting a 3-13 as partials. Fourth and fifth were also Spanish Juan Lleonart (CN El Balís) and the European bronze Mateo Carbonell (CN Jávea).
Up to the tenth position completed the Top 10 the Dutch Maurits Melens (6), the French Matthias Krauss (7), the Ukrainian Olha Lubianska (8), the British Leo Gosling (9) and the Swedish Alexander Forssen.
The women's podium was composed by Olha Lubianska, second the Balearic Amalia Coll (CN S'Arenal) and third the Swedish Adele Ramm.
Spain took the 18 Nations Cup as the best country with Iker Múgica, Joan Domingo, Pepe García Grandille and Joan Lleonart, who occupied the first four places overall and their individual scores.
