The sailors start the fight to enter the Medal Race of the 53 Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca

5th April 2024 by Agencies

An Embat of variable intensity in the seven race courses in the bay of Palma allowed the completion of the scheduled programme of races for most disciplines, with the exception of the Men's and Women's iQFOiL boards, which were unable to sail due to lack of wind in their area. The 470 Mixed could only compete in one race.

With the first four races of the 49er final series, the Catalan Cantabrian pair formed by Diego Botín and Florian Trittel took the lead and climbed from eleventh to second place in the provisional general rankings, tied on points with the Polish Lukasz Przybytek and Jacek Piasecki, the new leaders. The young Galician brothers Martín and Jaime Wizner also had an excellent day, with 19-3-5-3 in the standings, which moved them up to sixth place in the provisional general standings.

In 470 Mixed, the Catalans Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman, who won the World Championship a few weeks ago in these same waters, are still in provisional silver position. They were unsuccessful in the only race that could be completed in this double discipline, but the leaders, the Swedes Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson, also added their discard. Two points separate them in the overall provisional standings.

In Women's Formula Kite, a category that completed three races of the Final Series, the Catalan Gisela Pulido remains in fourth place in the provisional overall, while the first three classified in the top three were consolidated in the places of honour with comfortable differences between them: the American Daniela Moroz, the Australian Breiana Whitehead and the German Leonie Meyer, in that order.

In Nacra 17, with three races to go on this fourth day, the reigning Olympic champions, the Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti, took over the lead from the Germans Paul Kohlhoff and Alica Stuhlemmer, who dropped to ninth place. Canary Islanders Tara Pacheco and Andres Barrio posted a 11-28-8 record to finish tenth, just one point outside the coveted top ten that will advance to Saturday's Medal Race.

Singapore's Max Maeder is back at the top of the Formula Kite Men's fleet, but Italy's Riccardo Pianosi is just three points behind him. Slovenian Toni Vodisek was very consistent in three of the four races and placed third. Catalan Berni Cortés remains nineteenth, after a score of 19-7-(DNC)-4.

In ILCA 7, British Micky Beckett, last year's world runner-up, continues to increase his lead at the top of the table. In the national chapter, the two Canary Islanders who are playing for a passport to Paris 2024 are in a fierce battle. Joaquín Blanco's 11-29 score improved eight places in the standings, placing him twenty-first, but Joel Rodríguez shone especially bright, winning the first race of the day, and then scoring a 21, which leaves him just behind Blanco in the standings, and with only one point more.

Irregularity characterizes the ILCA 6 fleet, in which Australian Mara Stransky was able to hold on to the lead thanks to the debacle of Britain's Matilda Nicholls, co-leader at the start of the day. She is joined on the provisional podium, after two more rounds of the Final Series, by Hungary's Mária Érdi and Denmark's Anna Munch. The fight to represent Spain at the Paris 2024 Games in this women's individual discipline is red hot in the 53 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar, with the Catalan Cristina Pujol in forty-third place, and the Andalusian Ana Moncada just one step below.

In 49er FX, after the first four races of the Final Series, Norway's Helene Naes and Marie Ronningen continue to dominate. Japan's Misaki Tanaka and Sera Nagamatsu were the best of the day, with a 6-2-1-1 record to take second place. Germany's Marla Bergmann and Hanna Wille complete the provisional podium.

The iQFOiL Men's and Women's boards were unable to complete any race due to insufficient wind, so the rankings remain unchanged, with Poland's Pawel Tarnowski and Norway's Maya Gysler at the front of each fleet. Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita sailor Nacho Baltasar is in seventeenth place, and one place higher is Pilar Lamadrid from Seville in the women's category.

The fifth day of competition in the 53rd Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar will be full of excitement. The best in each discipline will fight to get into the top ten and secure their place in the Medal Races (or Medal Series for iQFOiL and Formula Kite) on Saturday. Light to medium winds are expected from approximately at 13 o'clock.
