The sailors take advantage of the excellent conditions of the second day of the Great Day of Sailing

21st August 2023 by Nautimedia

This sunday, the Club Nàutic S’Arenal (CNA) had a great day of races in the second voyage of the Great Day of Sailing - Bufete Frau, the most long-lived race of the club, that this year celebrates its 59th edition. Like Saturday, there were races for the categories Optimist Sub11, Optimist D (initiation), IQ Foil, Techno 293, Musto Skiff and Formula Windsurf, and with the participation of nearly 200 sailors, the total of those registered in these categories.

The sailors enjoyed a typical day in the bay, with spectacular weather conditions characterized by a steady and stable wind from the south-southwest (Llebeig) throughout the day, with an intensity of between 10 and 14 knots, which only dropped to around 8 knots in the last Optimist U11 race. In this way, three Optimist, Optimist D and Techno races were held, as planned, in addition to the three races already held in each of these categories on Saturday.

The day started at 12:00 hours, taking advantage of the fact that the wind was still a little more moderate, when the IQ Foil U17 and U19 sailed solo to be able to carry out the slalom races planned (four for the U19 and five for the U17, recovering the race that was left to be sailed on Saturday).

For the rest of the categories, the starting signal was at 13:00 hours, to carry out three races of Optimist U11, Optimist D and Techno 293, two of Musto Skiff and two of Formula Windsurf.

"Undoubtedly, the best thing about this regatta is the pool of sailors we have, very young athletes who exude enthusiasm and good work. They are the future of sailing, and everything points to it being an exceptional generation," said Jordi Castro, member of the Race Committee and sports director of the Balearic Sailing Federation (FBV).

The Musto Skiffs have finished this Sunday the regattas of this Great Sailing Day, although their trophy presentation will be held next week, at the end of the meeting. Thus, the final classification of this class is headed by Justo Martínez, followed by Mario Barceló and, closing the podium, Jorge R. Martín.

The other classes will continue racing this Monday, with the starting signal at 12 noon for all classes. The weather forecast predicts an 'embat' of between 11 and 12 knots, slightly lower than on Sunday and similar to the first day. The first phase of the 59th edition of the Great Day of Sailing - Bufete Frau will conclude on Monday with the prize-giving ceremony for the Optimist categories, at the CNA facilities, scheduled for 18:30.

The competition will resume in the middle of this week, with regattas from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th August for the Optimist U13, Optimist U16, ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and 420 classes, with trials, when the final trophy presentation will also take place.

In total, more than 700 top-level sailors will participate in the meeting aboard 575 boats in the Optimist, 420, ILCA 6, ILCA 4, ILCA 4, Open IQ Foil, Techno 293, Formula Windsurf, Musto Skiff, lateen sailing and cruising classes. They will be representing dozens of sailing clubs from all over Spain. The overall winner of the regatta will win the Rei En Jaume III Ciutat de Llucmajor Trophy.

Traditional sailing will also take centre stage at the event, as the second weekend will feature lateen sailing regattas, in Regatta, Llaüts and Open categories. The more social side of sailing will also have its moment, with regattas on 26 August for the cruiser category, which will compete in ORC. The event will also feature other parallel activities, including the XX Travesía Sa Milla CNA - Cala Blava, an emblematic open water swimming event that will take place on 26th August from 9am onwards at Es Caló beach, the proceeds of which will go to the ELA Balears association.

The Great Day of Sailing - Bufete Frau is the oldest regatta organized by the CNA and undoubtedly one of the most anticipated by sailing enthusiasts. It is one of the first regattas that were launched in the club, which faces it as a great celebration of the work done during the season. This great sporting and social event every year puts an end to the summer competitions and kicks off the new sporting season in the Balearic Islands.

The meeting, already consecrated in the regatta calendar of the Bay of Palma, is possible thanks to the collaboration of Bufete Frau. A company whose founder, José Frau Greenfield, has a historical relationship with the club in which he was formed and in which he has sailed since he was a child, achieving a not inconsiderable record, with titles such as Optimist world runner-up (1983), Spanish champion in Europe Class in 1984 and world runner-up in Europe Class in 1985. The family saga continued sailing in the CNA, so they are not only united by a commercial relationship, but also by an emotional one.
