The "Bayesian," a large and luxurious British-flagged sailboat that underwent maintenance and rigging inspections with RSB Rigging in Mallorca in 2016 and 2020, sank early last Monday while anchored off the port of Porticello.

A strong tornado broke the main mast, causing the vessel to capsize and sink. The Coast Guard responded after the sailboat sank with 22 people on board, 10 crew members and 12 passengers, and were able to rescue 15 of them, they reported in a statement.

Divers from the Fire Department have resumed the search for the six people missing in the wreck of the sailboat Bayesian in Sicily, among whom are the president of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, and the lawyer Chris Morvillo of the firm Clifford Chance, his wife Nada, the British magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

Specialized teams from Rome and Sardinia will focus their search inside the sailboat, which lies about 50 meters deep, where it is believed the missing were trapped.

In fact, divers recovered the body of a crew member this Monday, the cook Ricardo Tomas, a French national born on the island of Antigua, but they could not proceed beyond the bridge due to the presence of furniture blocking the way.

According to British media, the huge and luxurious 56-meter long sailboat 'Bayesian' belonged to Lynch, known for having launched several software companies, who had invited some friends to this vacation in Sicily.

Among the 15 survivors, a mother and her one-year-old daughter were taken to the Children's Hospital of Palermo, while the father was admitted to another hospital in the Sicilian capital and five other passengers were treated at a clinic.

The mother of the child, only identified as Charlotte, told the doctors who attended them that while she was sleeping, the boat capsized and they found themselves in the water and that for a few seconds she lost the child in the sea, but then immediately grabbed her again.

She said she could hear people screaming and that they were saved because a lifeboat launched by another nearby boat arrived almost immediately.

The Bayesian was a sailboat built by Perini Navi of Viareggio in February 2008 and was designed for luxury travel. In 2016 and 2020, it made technical stops in Mallorca for rigging work with the company RSB Rigging.
