DID YOU LIKE THIS CONTENT? WELL... YOU HAVE ALL OF OUR FULL PROGRAMS HERE!This Friday, March 7, at 8 PM, a new edition of the 'Xerrades Essencials' discussion series at the Club Nàutic Sant Antoni will take place, featuring filmmaker José Luis Mir and the screening of the documentary 'Carlos Cardona, an Ibizan in Hollywood'. Prior to the screening, there will be a talk between the filmmaker and journalist Xescu Prats, in which they will analyze Cardona's figure and the reasons that led him to produce this work.
This documentary, recently completed by Mir, delves into the biography of Carlos José Cardona Tur, who emigrated to the United States in 1920 with a dream: to make films. After several years traveling through different cities, he finally arrived in Los Angeles and settled in Hollywood. From the early days, he began working as an extra in some productions until, finally, in 1925, he found his definitive job in the film industry: special effects. He was part of the technical team for the first version of 'Ben-Hur' (Fred Niblo, 1925) and of 'King Kong' (Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1933), followed by many other films. Over the years, he founded his own company, Cardona Studios, and in the 1940s took a turn in his life and created the Cardona Company. With it, he moved into the world of invention, developing civilian and military projects. He returned to Ibiza in 1969.
José Luis Mir (Sant Antoni de Portmany, 1965) is a researcher and director of historical and traditional documentaries related to Ibiza and Formentera. He began his career as a film director in 2005, making various short films. The first was called 'Tras la puerta', and others followed such as 'Nadiuska', 'My night', 'I love you Mari', and 'The decision', some of which won awards at the Mostra de Curtmetratges de Sant Antoni. In 2008, he ventured into the world of documentary, creating works such as 'Crucero Baleares, 1936-1938', 'Formentera: base d’hidroavions (1936-1953)', 'Formentera Guitars: luthiers' school', 'Elmyr de Hory. The art of forgery', 'Ibiza flight 602' (about the plane crash in sa Talaia de Sant Josep), 'Pitiüses 1936-1939' (about the Civil War in Ibiza), and 'Champions' (about the participation of Sociedad Deportiva Portmany in the 1983 King's Cup against Atlético de Madrid). He is also the author of the book 'Santa Eulària Ibiza 1971: The hippies' rebellion'.
The series takes place in the social hall of Es Nàutic and highlights women and men with an interesting perspective on the evolution of Sant Antoni and Ibiza itself. It is an activity open to all the public on the island, with free access until full capacity is reached.
